Danila Vassilieff was one of the most loved and revered personalities in Australian art. The Russian-born Australian painter and sculptor’s presence and example were critical to the figurative and expressionist direction of Melbourne art in the 1940s.

Right Arrow

His down-to-earth direct approach to mark making helped to break down the stuffy values of the time, providing ammunition for the moderns in the debate between art and ‘modern’ art… for this, he has often been referred to as the ‘father of Australian modernism’.

This exhibition showcases a selection of works from his Mildura years, which were created during his time spent in here, and these are a highlight of the Mildura Arts Centre Collection.
