Centenary Lock Island, 2024. Mixed media

Lock 11 and weir commenced in 1923 and were completed in 1927. Lock Island was created with their construction, from a deep river bend which had supported indigenous tribes with food, tools and shelter. An ancient gum tree and canoe tree acknowledge their displacement. Pollution from smoke and
noise driving steam engines and pile drivers replaced them. Tents mushroomed and huts erected, housing workers and their families who lived on site.

Women, following their menfolk, endured heat, cold, dust, mud, flies, noise, and smoke as they cooked on open fires, raised children, planted gardens, and developed community whilst living in primitive conditions on the riverbank. My artistic practice focuses on the river, and unsung heroes – the women.
